As it Happened: Wunderman, the Smithsonian and Mr. Zip

Lester with president lyndon b johnson
In recognition of their efforts to spread the “Mr. Zip message,” Lester Wunderman and other members of the Ad Council met with then President Lyndon B. Johnson in the White House Rose Garden to accept his thanks.

Wunderman has carved out a special place in advertising history through its contribution of ideas and innovation. But perhaps one of its most enduring efforts was done in conjunction with the Advertising Council to support the United States Post Office’s launch of Mr. Zip. The cartoon of the smiling postman, Mr. Zip, was the centerpiece of a tremendous campaign to promote the use of the nascent Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP Code).

The Smithsonian Institution Postal Museum takes a comprehensive look at the story of the ZIP Code and how, with the support of Wunderman and others, Mr. Zip became a part of American culture.
